The EU funded project CANMILK (Carbon Neutral Milk) officially started on 1st September 2022. CANMILK is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe programme. The UK partners receive funding from UK Research and Innovation.
CANMILK will explore innovative methods and technologies in the fight against methane emissions in dairy and meat cattle barns. In particular, CANMILK will develop a technology based on non-thermal plasma that is simple to use and low maintenance, with a low overall cost so that it may be easily integrated to existing barn infrastructures. The work focuses on methane activation by plasma derived oxygen or hydrogen species enabling methane decomposition with the help of catalysts at mild conditions.
The CANMILK consortium is coordinated by Johanna Kihlman, Senior Scientist at VTT (Finland) and is formed of 7 partners from 5 different countries (Belgium, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and United Kingdom).
On 7th November 2022, the CANMILK partners met online for the project’s kick-off meeting. The productive discussions concentrated on the goals of each Work Package, the timeline for activities and key actions for the next months. The consortium is since actively working together towards the ambitious goals of this initiative. The next consortium meeting will be in person, in Helsinki during March 2023.
